It might come as a surprising fact that such an accomplished actor like Coates had never seen even a single play before he actually saw one when he attended the University of Saskatchewan and took Drama as an elective course. But then soon he was totally hooked into drama and never sort of looked back. Coates, however, admits that he took drama by chance at the University and a couple of years later, he had the realization that he wanted to be an actor. Coates portrayed the character of Stanley Kowalski in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and was also the youngest actor ever to play the titular character in Shakespeare’s masterpiece ‘Macbeth’ at the famed Stratford Festival which was held in his native land of Canada. Though it was a small role in his debut movie ‘The Boy in Blue’, released in 1986, the role sort of opened up new avenues for him in the film industry after which he went on to appear in over 100 titles till date.
