Early Life :
Mila J was born on 18th November 1983, in Los Angeles, California where she raised, as the daughter of Christina Yamamoto, an art teacher and Dr. Karamo Cholombo who was basically a musician himself and pediatrician as well. Later her parents divorced. She is accompanied by four siblings, two sisters and two brothers. Mila J’s sister Jhéne Aiko is also a singer. Nothing much could be accessed from her childhood days. However, one of the quite interesting facts about Mila J is, that she is mixed Dominican, Japanese, Spanish, African, American, German Jewish, French and Native American descent.
Career And Education :
It is not mentioned anywhere about the formal education of Mila J. While she began her career as an artist, by joining Up-and-coming dance group that sought ChrisStokes attention towards her. It was through Stokes, she was starred in Prince's music video “Diamonds and Pearls”, released in 1991. Stokes began to manage Mila J and her sister Miyoko and eventually let them formR&B group Gyrl, comprising her sister Miyoko and Paulette Maxwell. She appeared as backup dancer for R&B group Immature, which was then signed to MCA/Silas Records, with her group Innocence.The group appeared in several other music videos such as “Da Munchies”, “Constantly”, the remix to “Constantly”, “I Don’t Mind”. Her debut single with Gyrl was released by Silas Records 1991, which was called “Play Another slow jam”. In 1997, Glorika “Jeanae” Briley and Tai-Amber Hoo joined Gyrl following the exit of Paulette Maxwell and released the single “ Get Your Groove In”, which was later featured in the movie B*A*P*S. This single peaked at number 91 on US Billboard Hot100 and number 30 on the US HOT R&B Singles Chart, staying on the chart for over 14 weeks, becoming their highest chart appearance at that time. After that the Gyrl group was disbanded.
In early 2000, she took an escape from the music industry, telling that she couldn’t figure out who she actually was as an artist, working in girls group project. In 2005 Mila J became member of another girl group Dame four and released the single “How We Roll”. Dame four as well split soon thereafter.
Having appeared on the tracks of RaRa, IMx, Omarion, Mila J began to pursue her solo career releasing singles like “Split Personality”. In 2012, Mila J redefined herself by changing her name and appearance. Transformed Mila J was called Japollina, who was rough-sharp-edge unlike soft feminine Mila J. Being Japollina, she released a mixed tape for free download through DatPiff, supported by a music video “Blinded”, and also released “Movin On” music video and gave the single for free on her website and VEVO page. Once again, referring back to Mila J, she released her single “Smoke Drink Break-Up” with it’s music video premiering at BET's 106&Park. Since then she has been continuously entertaining her fans with various albums and music video singles, and in collaboration with popular fellow artists. She abandoned Motown record label in 2017, to become independent, and released 13 track EP “Dopamine” on April 7, 2017. She is currently seeking to release her debut studio album.
