Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Sonia Sunger is a Canadian by nationality. She grew up with her parents and elder sister Simi. Sonia Sunger is a second generation Canadian and she can speak Punjabi language very fluently and she is a Punjabi Indian by ethnicity. Sunger, who celebrates her birthday on 5th February, had keen interest in journalism and reporting from a very young age. She used to watch BCTV as she grew up and it influenced her career path to a large extent.
She had interest in reporting to such extent that she reported the details that she learned about Santa to her friends when she was just in the second grade. Sunger went to Montreal for a program in journalism at Concordia University but she moved to Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. Sonia Sunger graduated with honors from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology with a degree in Radio and Television Arts program. At this point she was thinking of alternative careers in Political science or law. However, at last she decided to be a journalist.

Initially, Sonia Sunger wrote for the University newspaper and also tried to start her own political affairs magazine. In middle of her university degree, she got into contact with CTV Edmonton's News Director. Then, she spent her summer break as an intern there which became a launch pad for her career. Sunger started to write and research stories for the 6 PM news anchors. Then she worked her way up to be the reporter and then an anchor at the 6 pm news in CTC Edmonton.
Sonia Sunger especially likes to report on breaking news but she has reported on news related to politics and crime as well. She was the part of team which covered the Slave Lake Wildfires for which she got awarded with RTDNA awards in 2011. After working at CTC Edmonton as the news anchor and reporter for six years, SOnia Sunger moved to Global news. In 2013, she became the weekday anchor for Global BC 1.
